Ms. Brown played the rest of the woodwinds. But my listening ears were off. I was mad that Mom and Ms. Brown were plotting against me. I bet they were going to make me play the clarinet.

When Ms. Brown was finished, Mrs. Stickler had us practice singing a song for Friday night’s concert. Our music teacher, Ms. Tibble, wasn’t there because we shared her with Eastwood Elementary.28

I just mouthed the words again. I did not want anyone to hear my not-so-perfect pitch.

26: The ear is a very complex sensor. The part of the ear that is on the outside of your head is a sound collector. The real hearing is done with a bunch of bones inside your skull. I thought about looking in my desk for another set of “listening” ears, but I didn’t think Mrs. Stickler would think that was funny.

27: Robin may have perfect pitch, but her voice is a little like scratching a chalkboard. And since you probably don’t have chalkboards in your school, you should ask an old person what that sounds like.

28: Eastwood is a school that is west of Hilltop. And is nowhere near the woods. It is surrounded by prairie. You’ve got to wonder who is in charge of naming schools around here.
